TIME TO BAIL-OUT THE POOR...THOSE HARDEST-HIT BY THE ECONOMIC CRISIS

The Issue

According to the above-linked NY Times article, for the first time in three decades, there will be no cost-of-living increase for Social Security recipients.

Instead of an across-the-board denial of Social Security cost-of-living increases, ONLY deny an increase to those Social Security recipients whose income is over a certain amount, and take IMMEDIATE action to increase Social Security benefits for those recipients who have no other source of income, who are already suffering terribly, unable to make ends meet.

NO ONE in this country whose sole income is Social Security, should have to live on less than $1500-$1800 a month, especially those recipients whose Social Security benefit is over $600--making them ineligible for SSI--yet less than $1500-$1800, making it impossible to pay for housing, utilities, etc., especially those recipients hardest-hit--those on Social Security Disability, who are in in the poorest of health--our country's most vulnerable citizens.

It is time for this country to regain a global reputation of honor, of courage, of intelligence, and prove to the rest of the world that we treat our disabled and elderly with as much respect, consideration, and compassion as we do our healthiest and youngest citizens--that we care enough for our disabled and elderly to provide for their most basic of needs by ensuring their income is sufficient for them to live out their lives in decent housing, with proper, respectful healthcare, with healthy food, and that we value their lives as much as we do the lives of our youngest, healthiest citizens.

Therefore, we demand the Federal government "think outside the box" and provide our most vulnerable citizens with a more equitable Social Security system.

This Petition/Action targets not only the US House, US Senate, and US President, but also:
