Thought The Obamas Were Getting A Shelter Dog?
So did we! Click here to send the President and First Lady an e-mail expressing your disappointment, and your expectation that any future dogs who join the family come from shelters or rescue groups, not breeders or puppy mills.
Tell President Obama: Adopt from a Shelter
Please express your disappointment that the Obamas obtained a puppy from a breeder, rather than adopting from a shelter as they had previously promised. Urge that any dogs the Obamas add to their family now or in the future should be from a shelter or rescue.
In October, 2008, President Obama said that he intended to adopt a shelter or rescue dog for his family if he won the election. Unfortunately, he ended up accepting a dog who was not a shelter or rescue dog, but one that came from a breeder.
This was truly a missed opportunity to set an adoption trend among Americans. If the Obamas had adopted from a shelter, it could have been the turning point for the dog overpopulation problem in the United States. With relinquishment reported to have risen 20 to 30 percent due to the poor economy, animals in shelters need all the help they can get.
Please send the letter below to tell President Obama and the First Lady that you feel strongly about adopting dogs from shelters and rescue organizations.
