In just a few weeks the East Coast of Canada will host one of the world's most beautiful wildlife spectacles when hundreds of thousands of female harp seals will gather to give birth to their pups.
But the beauty of this scene won't last long.
Seals give birth from late February until mid-March, transforming the ice floes into a huge wildlife nursery. After about 12 days, the mother leaves her fully-fed pup. The baby seals remain on the ice, surviving on the thick layer of blubber they accumulated during nursing.
A few days later, the seals moult to reveal a glossy, black-spotted, silvery pelt.
They can now be hunted.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FIRnv74n5c
