Dear elected representatives of North Carolina,

I hope this letter finds you in high hopes for the future, because that is where I currently stand. I stand on the precipice of despair, but I have my back turned. I look to the future and I see possibility. I see a way forward on which you and I can walk together.

I am writing to you today because I care. I care about how you represent me in Congress. I care about the bills you support. I am tired of living in debt to pay off my exorbitant student loans and I am sick of being unemployed yet educated. I am weary of trying to live honestly when the set of rules I have to live by does not apply to everyone.

I want the top 1% of the population to be taxed their fair share. When businesses and big corporations break the law, like Bank of America and their involvement in money laundering and fraud, I want you to have a problem with it. When tuition increases so much that more and more students must drop out of school just to support themselves, I want you to have something to say about how our financial system operates. And I am disgusted that if we, the people, try to speak out against this injustice, the NDAA bill allows us to be arrested without due process of the law.

When you think about taking money to fund your office, remember me. Yes, there are laws, such as Citizens United vs. FEC, in which the Supreme Court ruled it a violation of the 1st Amendment for you to take money from special interests and corporations, and these laws are important. But I am talking about something greater than what the law compels of you. Instead, I point to what is demanded of you by those you represent. You were not elected by big businesses and you should not hold their interests above those you actually serve.

I am writing to you today because I want you to remember for whom you stand.

You stand for the people. I am a youth. I am a student. I am the future, and I AM THE PEOPLE!

With utmost sincerity,

The students of the 99%
