The New York Public Library is taking steps to destroy what makes its central library (the Stephen A. Schwarzman research library) unique -- it is a non-circulating research library open to the public, with same day access. Also, by destroying the libraries stacks, the NYPL will be ruining a functional element of its architecture -- and its soul.
