Require Bear Run Coal Mine to apply for an individual pollution permit.

Require Bear Run Coal Mine to apply for an individual pollution permit.

The Issue

Beginning this year, the Bear Run Mine (owned by St. Louis based Peabody Energy) in southwestern Indiana is expected to produce 8 million to 12 million tons of coal annually and will become the largest coal mine in the eastern United States. But, IDEM is not requiring them to file for an individual water pollution permit, instead IDEM is letting them operate on a general permit with relaxed standards and self policing. Southern Indiana water ways are already polluted from mining activities and need to be cleaned up. Letting the largest mine East of the Mississippi go basically unregulated is a disaster waiting to happen. Please sign this petition to urge IDEM and Governor Mitch Daniels to require more stringent regulations of this mine.
