Demand for investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of inmates.

Demand for investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of inmates.

The Issue

It has been widely reported in the media that there is significant probable cause to believe that there is widespread sexual abuse of inmates at The Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. One report released by The Equal Justice Initiative states the following: “The Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Alabama’s only women’s prison, is the site of sexual assault and pervasive sexual harassment.” The report says guards have impregnated at least two inmates; it describes other instances of sexual assaults by guards, in one case by a chaplain. The report also says inmates are punished for reporting sexual misconduct. We respectfully request that a thorough and Un-biased investigation into these allegations be immediately conducted and a report of the findings be released to the public. We feel that this is a reasonable request given the magnitude of these allegations.
