Enact A Law Lowering the Time Limit on Legal Abortion to 20 Weeks
Enact A Law Lowering the Time Limit on Legal Abortion to 20 Weeks
The Issue
Virginia currently allows legal abortions to be performed for no medical reason up to 24 weeks of gestational age. Most states set this same limit after the "point of viability" was defined by the Supreme Court as "anytime the fetus may survive outside the mother's womb, albeit with medical aid, usually between 24-28 weeks gestational age". More and more babies survive every day when born between 22 weeks and 24 weeks. Medical and Scientific advances have made it possible for these babies to live. The youngest surviving babies in the world were both born at 21 weeks, 5 days gestational age. With every day longer, the number of surviving babies born an that gestational age rises exponentially. At 20 weeks of gestational age, there is no chance that a baby could survive outside the womb, even with medical care. I believe every woman has a right to choose for herself and a right to privacy, but I believe the "point of viability" has been significantly lowered, and therefore, the limit on legal abortion needs to be lowered along with it.
