Why This Is Important

You can see Wisk's Pimp My Laundry Room Contest homepage here. In addition to the offensive and tacky use of the verb "pimp" as a synonym for "to make cooler," Wisk also features a video that sends a clear: laundry is for women. It's a woman's chore, and a laundry room is a woman's room where women spend a whole lot of time. The sexist ramifications of such a message aside, if Wisk's new contest is all about creating a good space for their primary customers (women), then why would they choose to name their contest after people who harm and abuse women?

Perhaps Wisk has bought into the rise of the pimp and ho culture which is happening all over the country, as more and more "Pimp My ..."s are cropping up in pop culture. Perhaps they have forgotten that a pimp is someone who exploits another human being sexually for his own profit. Perhaps they just don't know that up to 100,000 American children are at risk for exploitation by pimps each year, and that pimps regularly recruit children as young as 12 into prostitution.  I hope Wisk chose this name for their contest out of ignorance, and not because they don't care that they're supporting the glamorization of sexual exploitation.

Change "Pimp My Laundry Room" Contest Name; Don't Glamorize Exploitation

Dear Mr. DeFeo,

As a consumer and someone who cares deeply about protecting women and children from human trafficking and sexual exploitation, I was disturbed to learn that the Sun Products Corporation was launching a "Pimp My Laundry Room" contest to promote it's product, Wisk. By giving your contest this name, you equate "pimping" with improving or bettering, which could not be farther from the truth.

Pimps are people who sexually abuse and exploit women and children for profit. Up to 100,000 American children are at risk for exploitation by pimps each year, and pimps regularly recruit children as young as 12 into prostitution. Pimps who sell children or women who have been forced, coerced, or deceived into prostitution are human traffickers. Since pimping is both a crime and a leading cause of the rape and abuse of children, I am shocked that Sun Products Corporation and Wisk would create a contest which glamorizes pimping.

I hope you will make an ethical and strong decision as a corporation to act responsibly and change the name of this contest to one which doesn't promote or glamorize the sexual exploitation of women and girls. Knowing that Wisk is a product that stands for the empowerment, rather than the degredation of women, will make me more likely to buy it.

Regards,
