Sandhill cranes are one of the treasures of Wisconsin.  Creatures of magnificent grace and poetry, ancient age and guttural cry, they should not be included on the list of animals which may be killed for sport during a select hunting season in Wisconsin. Corn does not need to be protected any more than it is already by federal subsidies. Besides, there are non-toxic, non-lethal alternatives to address cranes eating corn rather than shooting them.  Even more worrisome, if sandhill cranes were to be legally shot, it is all but inevitable that whooping cranes also would be killed, whether by accident or design; whoopers are an endangered species already critically close to extinction.  Tell Rep. Joel Kleefisch-R, author of this proposed bill, and ALL the elected officials in the Wisconsin State Legislature that cranes are more important than grains.
