What's an "illegal Haitian"? How about an "illegal American"?

The fact is, "illegal American" doesn't mean anything. Neither does "illegal Haitian." So when the Washington Times headlines "Illegal Haitians get short-term legal status," it represents fundamentally bad, lazy journalism. Even a conservative paper like the Washington Times ought to at least attempt basic accuracy over making up senseless terms.

The term "illegal immigrant" is bad enough. But "illegal Haitian" just takes it to a whole new level of absurdity.

Tell the Washington Times to shape up, correct it's terms, and issue an apology. There is simply no such thing as an illegal Haitian, no matter how short and catchy you think it makes the headline.

There's no such thing as an "illegal Haitian"

Greetings,

Your January 16th article, "Illegal Haitians get short-term legal status," makes up nonsensical terms.

Using "illegal immigrant" to refer to undocumented immigrants is already offensive, lazy journalism. But "illegal Haitian" brings it to an entirely new level of absurdity.

If there's one thing both pro- and anti-immigrant organizations should be able to agree on, it's the fact that these people are most certainly legally Haitians. As a newspaper that purports to provide readers with facts, you must be accurate in your terminology.

There's no such thing as an "illegal Haitian," no matter how short and catchy someone thinks it makes the headline.

Please correct the inaccurate, senseless headline in question, and issue an apology to your readership for making up terms.
