Dear friends, KTVA-TV in Alaska recently reported that - unbelievably - the U.S. Census Bureau is sponsoring a musher in the 2010 Iditarod. Please tell the Census director, Robert Groves, that tax dollars should not be used to sponsor a musher in this barbaric race. Dear Director Groves,

I am appalled to learn that my hard-earned tax dollars are being used by the U.S. Census to sponsor mushers in the despicable Iditarod dog race.

There is no end to the abuse animals exploited for this pointless event face. Among these atrocities are intense confinement, beatings, permanent lung damage, spinal injuries, bone fractures, torn muscles, severe dehydration, and of course, death.

While I support efforts to enlist Census participants, I do NOT - under any circumstances - support the exploitation or torture of sentient beings to achieve any end. I am particularly opposed to the use of MY money in such pursuits.

Please, I urge you to cancel all Iditarod sponsorships at once and institute a policy disallowing the use of taxpayer funds to support such events.
