On January 9, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Fairness Act with bipartisan support. The Senate version of the bill (S. 182) has been languishing in Congress ever since.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963, provide the same remedies in court for pay discrimination based on sex as for discrimination based on race or national origin, prohibit retaliation against workers who inquire about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages, and increase penalties for equal pay violations. It also establishes a competitive grant program to develop salary negotiation training for women and girls.

Equal pay for equal work. It's that simple. Tell your Senator that you want them to take action by bringing the Paycheck Fairness Act up for a vote.

Take Action on the Paycheck Fairness Act

Dear Senator,

On January 9, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Fairness Act with bipartisan support. The Senate version of the bill (S. 182) has been languishing in Congress ever since. I urge you to throw your full support behind this bill and take action to bring it to a vote.

In the United States, women make approximately 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns. In fact, over the past 40 years, the median earnings of women have fallen short by an estimated $700,000 to $2 million, depending on level of education completed. This harms all American families, not just women.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963, allow women to receive the same remedies in court for pay discrimination based on sex as those subjected to discrimination based on race or national origin, prohibits retaliation against workers who inquire about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages, and increases penalties for equal pay violations. It also establishes a competitive grant program to develop salary negotiation training for women and girls.

Do not let this appalling inequity be ignored a moment longer. Your immediate, active support is critical in making sure that this bill does not die of neglect.
