On June 7, 2011, Rep. Tim Bledsoe (D-Grosse Pointe) introduced and referred to the Committee on Regulatory Reform, House Bill No. 4714, known as the "pit bull regulation and prohibition act".

On June 11, 2011, the Committee Chairman, Hugh Crawford (R-Novi), stalled the bill. He stated that he had no intention of taking up Bledsoe's legislation "at this time".

Unfortunately, this does NOT mean that the bill is dead. Despite the Committee Chairman's refusal to advance HB 4714, Rep. Bledsoe plans to discuss the bill with Chairman Crawford the week of June 19, 2011, in hopes that the Chairman will reconsider and move the bill forward.

Please Do Not Regulate or Ban Pit Bulls in Michigan

Rep. Bledsoe,

I respectfully request that you remove HB 4714 from consideration by the Committee on Regulatory Reform.

The "pit bull regulation and prohibition act" singles out dogs based on appearance rather than behavior. Breed discriminatory laws are expensive to enforce, ineffective in preventing dog bites, and target responsible pet owners. Several municipalities in Michigan (e.g., Bay County, Dearborn, Lincoln Park, Rochester Hills, Southfield, and Sterling Heights), have recently considered passing breed discriminatory laws, but after researching all the facts, realized that these laws don't work and chose to implement breed-neutral laws that target reckless owners instead of innocent dogs.

Please consider pulling HB 4714. Dogs are individuals, and should be treated as such, no matter what their breed.
