For 18 years, the American Red Cross has been under a federal consent decree to improve its blood safety practices. Since 2003, the Food and Drug Administration has fined Red Cross $37 million for compliance violations, and $16 million in fines were issued in 2010.

FDA reports indicate that Red Cross compliance problems are frequently linked to issues such as staffing, training, and workloads. For years, Red Cross workers have been saying that they believe safety errors on the job are linked to working conditions, including understaffing, inadequate training, and workload.

Red Cross has also violated federal labor laws. National Labor Relations Board rulings were recently issued against Red Cross in Michigan and Connecticut, and hearings on violations are underway in New York and Pennsylvania.

Tell Gail McGovern that the American Red Cross must invest in its workforce to improve blood safety compliance and stop violations of workers’ rights.

Improve blood drive safety and remedy violations of workers' rights.

Dear President McGovern:

As a member of the public, I support the blood collection workers at American Red Cross who have called for improved safety and working conditions at blood drives. The Food and Drug Administration has fined Red Cross $37 million for blood safety compliance violations, and the National Labor Relations Board has issued citations against Red Cross for violations of labor laws. I believe that these types of problems not only affect safe working conditions for Red Cross workers, but also jeopardize safety for blood donors and the blood supply.

As a Red Cross worker, I am concerned about the history of safety and employment violations at Red Cross, resulting in $37 million in fines from the Food and Drug Administration and citations from the National Labor Relations Board, because of their effect on the working conditions and safety of Red Cross workers.

Blood service workers, donors and recipients should be assured of safety compliance by Red Cross. It is time for Red Cross to improve blood drive safety and remedy violations of workers' rights.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
