Tell President Obama and Prime Minister Harper: Tar Sands oil doesn't fit in the new energy economy!

President Obama will visit Canada. His visit is an opportunity to show that both Canadians and Americans want to move towards President Obama's vision for a new energy economy based on clean, innovative solutions.

A new energy economy shouldn't include dirty Tar Sands oil

Rather than embracing this vision, Canadian government officials are attempting to expand the development of dirty Tar Sands oil.

Tar Sands oil contributes to global warming, destroys the Boreal forest, and endangers public health.

Take Action -- send a letter to President Obama and Prime Minister Harper. Let them know that you want a clean energy future that does not include dirty tar sands oil.

Dear President Obama and Prime Minister Harper:

When you meet  in Ottawa, I urge you to strengthen our economies by agreeing to move aggressively towards a clean energy economy. Now, more than ever, we need your leadership to ensure that a more sustainable future in North America is possible.

Any clean energy future must include provisions that reduce greenhouse gasses wherever and whenever possible. Any special treatment for Tar Sands oil development would make our hopes for this future impossible.

Tar Sands development is a step backwards. It has rightly been called the most destructive project on earth:

*  Production of oil from the tar sands creates three times the global warming emissions of conventional oil.

* The Tar Sands are Canada's fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions and the largest fossil fuel project in the world.

* Local communities downstream of the Tar Sands are experiencing elevated cancer rates.

*  Its toxic lakes and mining operations, which can be seen from space, devastate the surrounding Boreal Forest and its species.

The United States and Canada possess vast potential in renewable energy and green economic solutions. Let’s build a relationship between the two countries on a foundation of hope, and not on a foundation of dirty Tar Sands oil.

Sincerely,
