TELL OIL & GAS COMPANIES TO SAVE THE WESTERN GRAY WHALE
The western gray whale is on the verge of extinction: There are about 130 animals left. Their main feeding habitat in summer time is the waters off Sakhalin Island, Russia, a region where some companies have been developing massive oil and natural gas exploration or extraction projects in recent years.
World Wildlife Fund and other organizations have requested that these companies postpone any new oil and gas development near Piltun Bay until the commission of experts has assessed the impact on western gray whales and made recommendations regarding further development in this area. Any future activities inside the proposed Sakhalin Marine Federal Wildlife Reserve should be avoided.
We will present your name, as part of the petition, to the leaders of ExxonMobil, Rosneft, and BP Group. We hope they will follow the positive example of Gazprom and Shell, which have already suspended their oil and gas activities off Sakhalin Island, recognizing the irreparable harm that these activities pose to this critically endangered species.
Thank you for your support,
All activists: Tell oil and gas companies to postpone new activities in the waters off Sakhalin Island immediately.
