On March 31st, President Obama announced a plan to open up U.S. coastlines to offshore oil and gas exploration, exposing 167 million acres of coastal waters, including birds, fish, marine mammals and other species, to the dangers of oil spills.

In mid-April, an oil rig sank in the Gulf of Mexico and began gushing thousands of gallons of crude oil. This is exactly why we need to stop offshore drilling.

Studies of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill have shown that the effects of oil on the environment lasts for decades. Obama's plan will threaten sensitive habitat for countless species, in addition to prolonging our addiction to oil and fueling climate change.

Tell President Obama to protect wildlife and our environment, and keep our coasts closed to oil and gas exploration

Please Protect Wildlife From Deadly Oil Spills

Greetings,

I was dismayed to learn of your plan to open up U.S. coastlines to offshore oil and gas exploration and I urge you to reconsider this decision.

The mid-April oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico shows that we are not able to prevent these disasters from occurring. Oil spills threaten birds, fish, marine mammals and other wildlife, in addition to damaging natural areas and affecting local economies. In addition, offshore drilling fuels our oil addiction, contributing to climate change.

These disasters have long-term effects. Recent studies have shown that Alaskan wildlife still has not fully recovered from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

I urge you to protect wildlife and our environment by keeping our coasts closed to oil and gas exploration. We should be investing in clean, renewable energy exploration instead.
