The Minnesota Senate is considering changing one of the most warped and wrong-headed laws in the nation: denying welfare benefits to mothers who have had miscarriages.
The profoundly stupid law in question says that many parents can only receive benefits for the number of children they had when they first applied for welfare and it counts a miscarriage as a “child.” That means a woman who has a miscarriage and then becomes pregnant again and gives birth could be denied benefits because her child would be considered her “second” by the state.
It is time to end this absurd law.
Sign the petition and tell Minnesota to end the miscarriage loophole and provide fair and basic support for all mothers and children in need.
Stop denying welfare benefits to mothers who have had miscarriages
Greetings,
I’m writing to ask that you support the amendment sponsored by State Sen. Linda Berglin that would repeal one of Minnesota’s most ridiculous laws: denying welfare benefits to mothers who have had miscarriages.
Under current law miscarriages count as live children for the sake of calculating welfare benefits and women with actual live children are being denied benefits because of this absurd system.
Repeal this law. It is unfair and senseless.
