You might have noticed Mike Huckabee in the news recently. He's on a book tour traveling around the country. He's making waves about running for President again in 2012. And he's chiding the media for paying too much attention to Sarah Palin, when he's got socially conservative values just as deep as she does.
Here's something Mike Huckabee also has: a best buddy who wants to see LGBT people killed or imprisoned for life in Uganda. And as recently as August 2010, Huckabee praised the work of this friend, a man named Rev. Lou Engle, who has made campaigning for the elimination of LGBT rights a central component of his life's work.
In Spring 2010, Rev. Engle traveled to Uganda and urged the government to pass legislation that would criminalize homosexuality with the death penalty or life imprisonment.
"[Engle] called upon the government of Uganda to be firm and hold on its righteous stand against the evil. He mentioned that homosexuals have penetrated the educational system and Ugandans must be aware of the evil," an eyewitness to the event reported.
And Mike Huckabee is OK with this? Send Huckabee a message that he must condemn this type of anti-gay and violent rhetoric. It's indecent, inhumane, and does nothing but foster a climate of violence, fear and hatred -- three things Mike Huckabee should take a firm stance against as a leader in the GOP and a minister himself.
Condemn Rev. Lou Engle's violent and anti-gay rhetoric
Dear Gov. Huckabee,
One of your close friends and colleagues, Rev. Lou Engle, has been a lightning rod of controversy for extremely violent and anti-gay comments he has made. Rev. Engle, of course, has worked hard for the elimination of gay rights here in the United States. But Rev. Engle has also championed efforts in Uganda to criminalize homosexuality with the death penalty or life imprisonment. That's unacceptable for a person of faith, and I urge you to condemn Rev. Engle's words.
In Uganda earlier this year, Rev. Engle told a crowd of 1,300 supporters that they should "be firm" in their stand against the evil of homosexuality. That means passing a bill that would literally result in LGBT people being killed, or locked up for life.
Simply put, Gov. Huckabee, there's no excuse for a politician of your level to support the words and ministry of someone like Rev. Engle, who clearly wants to foster violence and hatred toward an entire population. Please condemn Rev. Engle's actions, and take a firm stance against his use of violent rhetoric to push his agenda.
Thanks for your time.
