How We Won

Sep 22, 2011

After more than 5,500 supporters signed a petition by Serge Golubev's wife Angela Zikherman calling on his release from detention, Serge is finally going home to his family and will be able to witness the birth of his daughter.

Serge was brought to the U.S. on a visa when he was only 11 years old. His mother, who suffered from mental illness, let her son's documents expire and never filed the correct paperwork. Serge was placed in foster care and didn't find out he was undocumented until he was an adult. He was placed in removal proceedings after calling police seeking help for a friend who was attempting suicide, and spent nearly 5 months in detention, away from his pregnant wife and family.

But thanks to the work of United We Dream and the thousands who signed the petition, Serge has finally been released and will be able to fight his case from home.

"I dont know if i should dance or sing or scream. He will be home for the birth of our daughter. For my daughter's birthday. So a million more happy times. This is nothing short of a miracle. I cant believe it," said Angela. "It was not one single effort on my part but the 5,500 supporters who helped. Because of you, my husband will be coming home."

Sergey Golubev is married to a US citizen. Is expecting the birth of his American ciziten child on Dec 20, 2011. Has been in the US since age 10, which is more than 20 yrs. Sergey has completed high school. Sergey has no criminal record. Sergeys mother allowed his documents to expire while he was still a minor. Sergey could not afford a lawyer and was wrongfully advised to sign a voluntary deportation by a legal secretary. We desperatly need him home, we are the only family he has. He loves us and we love him. Allow this kind gentle wonderful human being to stay in the US with out because forcefully pushed out of the only country and life he has ever known.
