Texas Gov. Rick Perry has partnered with the vehemently anti-gay and anti-Semitic American Family Association (AFA) for an August rally in Texas called "The Response." Gov. Perry has invited all U.S. governors, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, to attend this event. Let's let Gov. Jindal know that he shouldn't support the AFA's extreme brand of hatred.
Officials with the AFA have blamed LGBT people for the Holocaust; have called LGBT people "Nazis" and "terrorists;" and have said that gays and lesbians "are in the clasp of Satan."
Other leaders with the AFA, including those involved in "The Response," have previously criticized Jewish people for "controlling Hollywood," and one columnist for the AFA even suggested that Jewish people are more prone to becoming criminals.
Moreover, leaders with the AFA have recently suggested that Native Americans are "cursed by God" to suffer from alcoholism and poverty, have said that people shoudn't practice yoga because it comes from the "evil" religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, and have compared gay adoption to the September 11 attacks.
Are these the type of beliefs that Gov. Jindal really wants to throw his support behind?
Let's urge Gov. Jindal to publicly say he won't support the extreme, hate-filled agenda of the AFA, and that he won't attend "The Response" rally.
Please don't support anti-gay, anti-Semitic, racist American Family Association Rally
Dear Gov. Jindal
As governor of Louisiana, you've been invited to participate in an August 6 rally known as "The Response," co-hosted by an extremist, anti-gay, anti-Semitic organization known as the American Family Association (AFA). I urge you not to attend this event, and to go on record condemning the extremism of the AFA.
Leaders with the AFA, including some of those who are organizing "The Response," have issued extremely disturbing statements targeting LGBT people, Jewish people, Native Americans, Muslims, and African Americans. Leaders with the AFA have said, among many other troubling things:
-- that LGBT people are to blame for the Holocaust;
-- that gay adoption is as "destructive" as the September 11 attacks;
-- that Jewish people "control" Hollywood;
-- that Native Americans are "cursed by God" and deserve lives of alcoholism and poverty for not converting to Christianity;
-- that yoga is immoral because it comes from "evil" religions, including Buddhism and Hinduism;
-- that Muslims are "inherently stupid" and should be banned from building mosques in the United States
Are these the types of values that you'd like to support as governor of Louisiana?
I urge you to refuse the invitation to join with the AFA at "The Response." These types of beliefs do nothing but tear us apart as Americans, and foster hatred and violence toward various groups. They shouldn't be celebrated or endorsed by our political leaders, regardless of party affiliation.
Thank you for your time.
