As the upcoming election nears, the candidates continue to speak more and more about their political stances and ideologies. However, some statements our candidates are making give more reason to be chilled with anxiety rather than cheer them on.

Three of the GOP candidates (Romney, Bachmann, and Santorum) have recently pledged that, if elected, they will not only oppose same-sex marriage, but even go to the lengths of silencing LGBT activists. They would establish a presidential commission to "investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters." In other words, if empowered with the ability to do so, they would further strip homosexuals of their rights--and silence the ones defending said rights.

We need to stand together and inform these officials that we won't merely sit back and let our friends--and ourselves--get crushed under unfair bias and prejudice. There is nothing wrong with being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual. And if these candidates are elected, more and more people will be tricked into thinking they're awful human beings for something that is beyond their control. Not only that, but these candidates only mention harassment on the pro-equality side. They say nothing about groups like NOM and Westboro Baptist Church. This hypocrisy is not only unsettling, but downright disgusting. These officials would allow the widespread preach of hate and alienation whilst chilling the speech of those that oppose them. These candidates appear to think that freedom of speech is only applicable to the 'traditional' folk, and not to those that attempt to give equality to the oppressed and beaten.

Tell Romney, Bachmann, and Santorum to recall their preposterous pledges. The LGBT controversy is one thing, but these people would directly violate the freedom we as Americans cherish so dearly: the freedom of speech. We cannot stand idly by and let this basic principle and right be downtrodden. The hate groups are allowed their freedom of speech to openly alienate individuals. We as a community need to be allowed the freedom to oppose such discrimination.
