Only the EPA has the power to set an enforceable limit on fluoride in our drinking water.

Fluoride is a added to tap water to protect teeth from decay, but the federal Department of Health and Human Services has recently recommended a drastic lowering of fluoride levels following a government study showing that two out of five adolescents have streaking and spottiness (and sometimes pitting) on their teeth due to too much fluoride. A high intake of fluoride over time can increase the risk of bone problems There is even debate within the EPA over whether or not any fluoride is safe in drinking water at all. In 2005, the heads of 11 EPA unions asked EPA to stop adding fluoride to water completely. Why? Some studies point to a possible link between exposure and bone cancer, neurotoxicity and thyroid function issues.

Tell EPA to lower the fluoride level in our drinking water down to the safer level recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Lower the Fluoride Level in Drinking Water

Greetings,

The federal Department of Health and Human Services recently recommended a drastic lowering of fluoride levels in drinking water following a government study showing that two out of five adolescents have streaking and spottiness on their teeth due to too much fluoride. In extreme cases, teeth can even become pitted. In addition to the cosmetic issues are more unsettling ones, a high intake of fluoride over time can increase the risk of bone problems -- brittle bones and fractures or even severe bone abnormalities. Skeletal fluorosis is painful and sometimes crippling.

HHS has recommended that the level of fluoride in tap water be reduced to 0.7 parts per million but only you can set a standard that is enforceable. We need an enforceable law restricting the amount of fluoride in our drinking water to a safer level.

In light of the new studies, the current EPA fluorine limit is incredibly high, coming in at nearly six times the upper limit of the new HHS recommendation. There are far too many health risks associated with a high fluoride consumption over time. Some studies point to a possible link between exposure and bone cancer, neurotoxicity and thyroid function issues.

We deserve safe drinking water! Is the EPA taking into account that most people get fluoride from many places now and adding so much, or any, to drinking water could now be detrimental to our health?

I urge you to lower the allowable fluoride limit to that recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services.
