Against the backdrop of the assaults on unions happening in many statehouses across the country, a little-noticed provision of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization bill moving through Congress represents a similarly shameless attack on unions.
Some Members of Congress are trying to adopt a standard for airline and railroad elections to count eligible voters who did not participate in the election the same as actually having voted “no” in the election. Counting non-voters as “no” voters is a flagrant violation of fair election standards and would stack the decks against unions. If Members of Congress were held to this standard none of them would have won their elections in 2010.
Stop this attack! Tell Congress to keep elections fair for all Americans!
Fair Elections for All Americans
Dear Congressperson,
I’m writing to express my support for keeping all elections in America fair and democratic.
A provision currently inside the House version of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization bill would change the rules governing union elections for air and rail workers. The proposal would make these elections – overseen by the National Mediation Board – subject to an election standard that deviates from basic American standards of fairness.
Specifically, the proposed election standard would count non-participating voters as having voted “no.” That is ridiculous--all elections in this nation should only count the ballots cast. This isn’t a pro-union position, it’s a pro-American democracy position.
The common sense nature of the current NMB elections rules is one of the reasons that a bi-partisan group of supporters want to keep the current rules intact. Please join the effort for keeping all American elections fair and democratic. Please defeat the attempt to change the election standards for NMB elections.
