An investigation led by an activist in London, and published in the Independent, shows that conversion therapy for homosexuals is widespread in England. More than that, there's even evidence that the National Health Service is spending taxpayer money to support reparative therapy.

That's unacceptable. There's no scientific evidence that people can "repair" their sexual orientation. On the contrary, such therapy has been shown to have catastrophic psychological and emotional effects, leading one patient to dub the therapy as "psychological torture."

Tell the National Health Service, as well as the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and the General Medical Council that there's no place in government to support damaging and dangerous "conversion therapy."

Do Not Support Conversion Therapy for Gays and Lesbians

To Whom It May Concern,

In a February 1 investigative report in the Independent, a journalist brought startling claims that the National Health Service in England was supporting the use of conversion therapy for homosexuals with taxpayer money. This is unacceptable.

Psychotherapy to convert a person's sexual orientation has been roundly condemned by the scientific and psychological communities. These types of therapy, often championed by ex-gay movements, have been labeled as psychological torture. They do not help gay and lesbians; in fact, they can cause severe and lasting trauma and stress.

I demand that the National Health Service disclose whether taxpayer money has gone to support conversion therapy for homosexuality. If NHS resources have gone toward championing this dangerous therapy, I demand that you immediately cease supporting this bad science.

Current estimates indicate that one in six psychotherapists have tried to change a patient's sexual orientation. That's not only unethical, it's dangerous. There's simply no way the NHS should be supporting such bogus science.
