Arkansas Rep. Bryan King is attacking Eureka Springs, the only city in Arkansas (and in the mid-South region of the country) with a same-sex domestic partnership registry. Rep. King has introduced a bill in the Arkansas House of Representatives that would strip Eureka Springs of its DP registry system.  That's needlessly discriminatory, and could threaten the insurance benefits that many same-sex couples share.  Let's tell Rep. King that his bill has no place becoming law in Arkansas.

I support the Eureka Springs Domestic Partnership Registry

Dear Representative King and Mayor Joy

As a supporter of equal rights and someone who believes that same-sex couples should be entitled to equal access to insurance benefits, I am disheartened by efforts to repeal the Eureka Springs (Ark.) Domestic Partnership Registry.  The Registry has no force of law officially, but it does allow some same-sex couples to receive insurance benefits if their employer offers such benefits.  To repeal this registry, and by default jeopardize the right of same-sex couples to receive health care or insurance benefits, is an unjust exercise in discrimination.

Mayor Joy has said that "Prejudice and bigotry have no place in Eureka Springs."  I support that statement by offering my unqualified support for the Eureka Springs Domestic Partnership Registry.  As the only city with a DP Registry in the entire mid-South region of the country, Eureka Springs is showing real leadership by promoting basic civil rights.

I would ask that Rep. King seriously reconsider his efforts to promote legislation repealing the Registry in Eureka Springs.  A municipality should have the right to enact such registries in the best interest of their constituents.  State government should not be in the business of repealing liberty, which is exactly what a repeal of the Eureka Springs DP registry would do.
