Oppose Elephant Culls in South Africa

South African Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, has announced new regulations which will ban the capture of elephants for commercial exhibition facilities, prohibit the import and export of captured wild elephants, and prevent intensive breeding of captive elephants. While this is excellent news, the Minister also announced the inclusion of culling as an option of last resort for elephant population control.

There are a series of conditions that must be met before culling is used, but South Africa must know what's at stake should the government choose to move forward with killing elephants instead of pursuing other options such as immunocontraception. The country's multi-billion dollar tourism industry will be hit the hardest as people appalled by the elephant culls refuse to visit South Africa.

TAKE ACTION
Please write to the South Africa Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, and tell him that you will not visit South Africa if the government ever chooses to move forward with an elephant cull.
