We urge passage of H.R. 1091, the Student Privacy Protection Act of 2009, a bill to ensure that our schools provide military recruiters with personal information about a student only if the parent of the student has given prior written permission to have that information released to the recruiters.

Currently schools must provide personal student information to military recruiters unless the parent of the student requests that this information be withheld.  This option, often referred to the Opt-Out option, requires the action of the parent of the student to prevent personal information from being released to recruiters.  This petition is asking that this Opt-Out policy be replaced with an Opt-In policy, where personal information will not be released to military recruiters unless the parent of the student explicitly consents to the release of such information.

Please support the Student Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 1091)

Greetings,

I am writing to urge passage of H.R.

I am asking that this Opt-Out policy be replaced with an Opt-In policy, where personal information will not be released to military recruiters unless the parent of the student explicitly consents to the release of such information.

This bill ensures that those students who are interested in military service can still have their personal information released to recruiters without compromising the privacy of students who are not.

H.R. 1091 was referred to the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education in 2009, and as of late summer, 2010, it was still there. I urge you to become a cosponsor of this important bill if you are not already a cosponsor, and to fully work to support it to ensure that it makes it to the floor of the House. The last thing our children need as they contemplate their future is an unsolicited and unwanted hard sell by a determined military recruiter. I urge you to act to protect our children's privacy. Please support the Student Privacy Protection Act of 2009.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your action and response on this issue.
