When the U.S. Senate failed to pass the DREAM Act last year, and provide a just way for immigrant youth who have grown up American to continue their education, the battle moved to the states.
After months of steady organizing by local DREAM Act networks and groups like CASA de Maryland -- and thousands of actions from Change.org members, who contacted MD delegates -- Maryland has finally passed an in-state tuition bill. Yesterday, the Maryland House voted to approve the "Maryland DREAM Act" 74-66, and the Governor is expected to sign the measure in a matter of days.
This is a major win for immigrant youth and allies in Maryland, and their supporters, who were working up to the last minute to rally support for this critical change. Thanks to all of you who took action, Jackie and Jamie will be able to pursue their dreams of going to college and giving back to the country they call home.
Students from all over Maryland, supported by local faith, education, and labor leaders are fighting for an affordable college education and the right to pursue their dreams.
Under the proposed “Maryland DREAM Act:”- Higher Education- Tuition Charges- Maryland High School Students Bill (SB167, HB 470), students who live in Maryland would qualify for in-state tuition rates at Maryland’s colleges and universities regardless of immigration status.
Their movement has grown from a small group of students in our local high school and college campuses to a unified group of thousands who are actively pushing for change and passage of the bill.
In February, 100 students testified before the Maryland Senate and on March 7th, more than 1,500 students and supporters rallied in Annapolis during CASA de Maryland's Annual Immigration Action Night. We filled Senate hallways, offices and hearing rooms. Our message rang loud and true.
Last week, we had our first victory – passage of the Maryland DREAM Act in the Senate!
CASA de Maryland's members will continue to fight in Annapolis until all Maryland high school students have an affordable option to attend college, but we need your help!

Hello,
I am writing to express my full support of the Maryland DREAM Act, SB167!
I am very hopeful that Maryland will soon become the latest State in the Union to recognize the importance of higher education for all students, and remove any and all barriers that prevent immigrant and latino youth from achieving their dreams and contributing to our economy.
Can I count on your support for SB167--the Maryland DREAM Act?
Sincerely,
