New Hampshire House Speaker Bill O'Brien is trying to deny students the right to vote in the towns where they attend school. Although he says he wants to limit the Constitutional rights of Granite Staters because of "voter fraud," his real motivation is crystal clear: he doesn't want young people voting for Democrats.

This proposed legislation, which would bar students from civic participation in the community where they go to school, is not only unethical, it is also unconstitutional. We must stop the NH Legislature from taking away young people's fundamental right to participate in our democracy especially for such blatantly partisan purposes.

Please join me in voicing your opposition to H.B. 176

Protect Student Voting Rights

Dear Representative,

As a New Hampshire Representative serving on the Election Law Committee, I urge you to vote against recommending H.B. 176 for a vote in the full House. As you know, the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees citizens 18 and older the right to vote. If New Hampshire were to pass this legislation and disenfranchise student voters, it would likely lead to costly legal challenges.

Many New Hampshire college students participate in the civic life of the community where they attend school. To strip them of that right, could discourage them from future political participation and limit the potential of future leaders.

The intent behind this bill is clearly to reduce the number of Democrats voting. Please don't give in to political pressure from the Republican party and support it. Our democracy depends on the people having a say in their government. It will cease to be a democracy if the leaders choose their voters rather than the voters choosing their leaders. It is crucially important to rise above partisan politics and vote no on HB 176.
