Without additional funding for the unexpected emergencies this year, the U.S. government will not have the resources to continue to provide life-saving emergency food assistance to millions of families in desperate need.

Re: Emergency Food Assistance in the Supplemental Appropriations Bill

Greetings,

As you consider the 2010 Supplemental Appropriations Bill, I urge you to support a minimum of $580 million for emergency food assistance programs. Millions of people around the world who have been affected by man-made conflicts, natural disasters and other crises rely on emergency food assistance to survive. Large-scale humanitarian relief operations in Haiti, Darfur and the Horn of Africa have increased this year as a result of the continued impact of the global economic crisis, ongoing conflicts and natural disasters. Without additional funding we will see a shortfall of at least $580 million, which means that these life-saving programs will not reach those in desperate need.

I want to help the more than 1 billion people suffering from hunger around the world and ensure that vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, children and the elderly, receive life-saving food assistance during emergency situations. My neighbors and community share my commitment to help the hungry in the world’s poorest countries.

I know you share my desire to help those in need and urge you to support a minimum of $580 million for emergency food assistance.

Thank you for your commitment!
