Urge California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign Harvey Milk Day into law.
Support Harvey Milk Day
Dear Governor
I urge you to support SB 572, which would establish the May 22 of each year as ‘Harvey Milk Day’. Harvey Milk was a champion of gay rights and he spent the last years of his life fighting discrimination. Harvey Milk was brave for being in the spotlight advocating for gay rights day and night.
Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in America and he helped defeat a discriminatory ballot measure aimed at banning gay teachers and allies from teaching in public schools. Harvey Milk gave hope to every gay teen who suffered rejection and discrimination and he made it possible for them to grow up and become something great.
Harvey Milk worked tirelessly to end discrimination and prejudice against gays and lesbians until his assassination. Last year you vetoed a bill that would have honored Harvey Milk, claiming his greatest impact was in San Francisco. Gays exist in places other than San Francisco, and he impacted gays’ lives everywhere. Harvey Milk has been awarded with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, he has been inducted into the hall of fame (thank you) and has had a major movie made in his honor. You can no longer say that Harvey Milk is not well known out of San Francisco. His impact was everywhere, he was the beginning of the gay rights movement, and he made gay equality and progress possible today.
There are lies spreading about this bill from the opposition. Please do not give in to the bigots’ demands. Please give a day to honor this man and what good he did for America. Do the right thing and sign Harvey Milk Day into law.
