The Supreme Court has announced a new ruling that allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money to support political campaigns. The result will be a huge increase in the role big corporations play in politics.
Representative Alan Grayson of Florida has proposed four pieces of bold legislation to help remove corporate influence from our political system and we need strong measures like these now more than ever.
1. The Business Should Mind Its Own Business Act would impose a 500 percent excise tax on corporate contributions to political committees and on corporate expenditures on political advocacy campaigns.
2. The Corporate Propaganda Sunshine Act would require public companies to report what they spend to influence public opinion on any matter other than the promotion of their goods and services.
3. The End Political Kickbacks Act would restrict political contributions by government contractors.
4. The Bar Corporations Not in Compliance with Election Law Act would ban companies from exchanging securities if they violate election laws.
All four of these measures are bold changes that would profoundly shift the power that large corporations have over our elected officials. In the shadow of the Supreme court's ruling eliminating limits of corporate spending for elections now is the time to act to help support a strong democracy and fair elections.
Please send a letter to your representative supporting all four bills today using the form below.
