With Governor Brown's proposed 2011-2012 budget closing as many as 70 of the 278 state parks, much of the land is subject to purchase by public funds or private entities. Senate Bill 580, sponsored by Senators Wolk and Kehoe, is an extension of Senate Bill 679, which passed the state legislature but was vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. Senate Bill 580 stipulates that state park lands cannot be used for non-park purposes unless there is no practical alternative to using those lands and replacement lands are provided, or a combination of replacement lands and monetary compensation is provided, to make the investment in state parks whole.

Pass Senate Bill 580 and Provide Security and Protection of Our State Parks

Greetings,

The desire to ensure the integrity of our state park system, stems from a common interest in the recreational, environmental, historical, and cultural significance of the natural world. Entrenched in the American psyche is the desire to explore and survey the frontier, the very reasons which helped launch California into statehood. To protect our parks is to protect the geological and physical landmarks that define our state. Buildings may be torn down and rebuilt, leveled or added to, constantly changing the landscape of a city, but destruction of nature cannot be easily reversed. California state parks are everyone's backyard, and as such, must be protected.
