Ohio utility giant AEP is trying to raise electricity rates more than 8% in West Virginia after just being approved for a 12% hike in September.
This is going to be a major burden on the families in West Virginia that are already struggling through the recession.
Perhaps worse yet is the justification for raising rates. AEP says it has to find $96 million dollars to pay to improve the pollution control systems on a gigantic 39 year-old coal-fired power plant (pictured on left).
While pollution control is, of course, a good thing, this is $96 million being used to keep us burning dirty coal in a deteriorating plant rather than investing in clean renewable energy.
The coal industry says we can’t stop using coal because it will raise our electricity rates. But they want to raise the rates anyway and keep burning coal, the single biggest source of the global warming emissions.

Stop Utility Rate Hikes
Greetings,
I am writing to ask that you deny American Electric Power’s request to raise electricity rates 8% in West Virginia.
The increased costs would be a major burden on families in the state. Further, we need to be investing in renewable energy rather than increasing our spending to keep old dirty coal plants running.
We shouldn’t be paying more for dirty energy. It is time to invest in new technology and save money for families everywhere.
