The US Fish and Wildlife Service at the US Department of the Interior recently announced it would halt the planting of genetically-engineered crops in Northeastern National Wildlife Refuges, in a settlement to a lawsuit from several advocacy groups.
However, this practice continues in Southeast refugees. The planting of genetically-engineered crops in these environmentally-sensitive and protected areas threatens native flora and fauna. These unnatural crops require pesticides which pollute the environment, threaten native plants, have the ability to create pesticide-resistant super-weeds and are dangerous to local wildlife and birds.
Ask the US Fish and Wildlife Service to extend their ban on the planting of these crops to Southern wildlife refuges.
Stop the Use of GE Crops in National Wildlife Sanctuaries
Dear Mr. Gould,
I'm writing to you today to thank you for banning the use of genetically-engineered crops in Northeastern National Wildlife Refuges and to extend this policy to Southern refuges immediately. The planting of these crops threatens the delicate environments of these cherished refuges. Native flora and fauna are threatened by the use of genetically-engineered crops. These seeds require significant amounts of pesticides which pollute the environment, have the potential to create pesticide-resistant super-weeds, threaten the survival of native plants and affect the food sources for local birds and wildlife.
Protection of our cherished national wildlife sanctuaries is critical. The ban on the use of generically-engineered crops in these areas is critical to ensuring their healthy protection for generations to come.
I urge you to extend the ban on GE crops throughout the southern refuge system as soon as possible.
Thank you.
