In Arizona, pregnant women, especially undocumented immigrant women, are being shackled during pregnancy and after giving birth.

Medical professionals have deemed this practice dangerous to the health of both the mother and her child.

The vast majority of these women are arrested for non-violent, minor offenses, yet the are still treated in this degrading and unsafe manner at a time when they are least likely to pose a threat or flight risk.

This practice of shackling women is inhumane and unnecessary. Tell the Arizona State Legislature to pass a bill banning the use of shackles on pregnant women.

Stop the Shackling of Pregnant Women

Greetings,

In Arizona, pregnant women are being shackled during pregnancy and after giving birth. This is a procedure as unnecessary as it is harmful to the health of the mother and her child, as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has warned.

This law particularly harms undocumented immigrant women, who are not permitted to post bond while awaiting trial, even for minor, non-violent offenses.

This practice of shackling compounds other problems, such as malnutrition, inadequate medical care, and babies being taken away from women who want to nurse upon delivery.

No women should spend her pregnancy in shackles. No woman should be chaining after the painful, draining process of giving birth. This is inhumane treatment, and should be recognize as such.

Please take the pro-family stance and pass a bill banning the use of shackles on pregnant women.
