Less that two days ago I started a petition to stop the constitutional amendment against marriage equality for same-sex couples in Minnesota. That petition was for the Senate. Today in the Minnesota Independent we learned that a companion bill has been introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Republicans in the Minnesota House introduced three bills on Thursday that would put a ban on same-sex marriage into the Minnesota Constitution. The bill is a companion to the bills offered in the Minnesota Senate on Tuesday. Rep. Steve Gottwalt, R-St. Cloud, liked the idea so much, he’s offered two additional identical bills of his own.
HF1613 would ask the voters in 2012, “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?”
It was introduced by lead author Rep. Gottwalt and Reps. Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake, Kurt Daudt of Crown, Mike Benson of Rochester, Mary Kiffmeyer of Big Lake, Matt Dean of Dellwood, Kurt Zellers of Maple Grove, Mary Franson of Alexandria, Glen Gruenhagen of Glencoe, Kathy Lohmer of Lake Elmo, Steve Drazkowski of Mazeppa, Debra Kiel of Crookston, Peggy Scott of Andover, Bruce Anderson of Buffalo Township, Sondra Erickson of Princeton, Chris Swedzinski of Ghent, Bruce Vogel of Willmar and Ron Shimanski of Silver Lake.
Gottwalt also introduced two bills that were identical to the first, and he is the only sponsor of those two bills, HF1614 and HF1615.
Help stop the constitutional amendment in the House with just as many signatures as we are sending to the Senate. Let them know that we do not support this move.
Stop the Constitutional Amendment Against Marriage Equality in Minnesota--MN House
Dear House Representatives of Minnesota
We the undersigned call on you today to urge you to defeat the recently introduced bill to amend Minnesota's State Constitution to permanently ban marriage equality for same-sex couples. There is not one family, anywhere in the state, that will benefit from passing this divisive amendment. This only discriminates against thousands of LGBT Minnesotans, denying them equal protection of the laws that make our families more stable and our society a better place for all of us to live."
This Constitutional Amendment Bill is anti-jobs, anti-business and anti-family.
* Minnesotans deserve better - At a time when the state faces a $5 billion dollar budget deficit with only weeks left of the session, it is unconscionable that legislators would turn their attention away from a budget compromise and toward placing discrimination in our constitution. 74 percent of Minnesotans believe policymakers should focus on the economy and creating jobs instead of spending time on social issues.
* The amendment is redundant - 71 percent of Minnesotans believe that because "Minnesota already has a law banning same-sex marriage, we don't need a constitutional amendment."
* It places Minnesota families at risk - This amendment would permanently place discrimination in our state constitution. No family is defended by this action. Instead, the ability of thousands of Minnesota same-sex couples and their families to care for and provide for each other would be threatened.
* It moves Minnesota in the wrong direction - A wealth of research finds that inclusion strengthens the economy, and Minnesota employers and local communities know it. That's why they have led the way by implementing inclusive policies.
We the undersigned therefore urge you to defeat the recently introduced bill to amend Minnesota's State Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
Respectfully Submitted,
