Why This Is Important

No positive outcomes of a police car pursuit of anyone can offset even one death of a single suspect or innocent bystander. In other words, the value of a life far, far outweighs the value of catching an offender and imposing a fine or jail sentence.

5 Victorians killed in the 8 weeks to January 22 as a result of high speed police pursuits is simply not acceptable. In particular, the Police claim that all of these deaths occurred just after they called off the chase is valueless, naive and treating Victorians as if we are completely stupid.

Commander Trevor Carter said "the current pursuit policy appeared to already strike the right balance" This is lunacy... how many persons were apprehended as a result of high speed chases in the last 8 weeks? I assume that it must be a lot to be worth killing 5 Victorians! One doubts that he would continue to espouse this indefensible attitude if his wife, son or daughter was among the unfortunate dead or seriously injured.

Stop police vehicle pursuits in Victoria

Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to:

Police Minister Peter Ryan; and
Chief Commissioner Ken Lay.

Please Stop Killing Innocent Victorians

I believe that there are no possible positive outcomes of a police car pursuit that can offset the negative outcome of even one death of a single suspect or innocent bystander. In other words, the value of a life far, far outweighs the value of catching an offender in the hope of imposing a fine or jail sentence.

5 Victorians killed in the 8 weeks to January 22 as a result of high speed police pursuits is simply not acceptable. In particular, Victoria Police claims that all of these deaths occurred just after they called off the chase is valueless, naive and treating Victorians as if we are completely stupid.

I was appalled to read that Commander Trevor Carter said "the current pursuit policy appears to already strike the right balance" This is lunacy... how many persons were apprehended as a result of high speed chases in the last 8 weeks?

I assume that it must be hundreds or even thousands, to be worth killing 5 Victorians! One doubts that Commander Carter would continue to espouse this indefensible attitude/policy if his wife, son or daughter was among the unfortunate dead or seriously injured.
