According to the Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division, Thomas Perez, New Orleans is under more federal scrutiny than any other single law enforcement agency in the country. This scrutiny comes after numerous cases have reared their ugly heads, showing a dark side to the department and it's potentially deadly blue code of silence. In all, the New Orleans division of the FBI admits to having 8 open cases of potential civil rights violations by officers of the NOPD.

These cases feature police cover-ups, planted evidence, and even murder, all at the hands of those tasked with protecting the people of New Orleans.

Perez has said that the feds are keeping "all of their options open" when it comes to potential action in New Orleans. In order to make a difference before another innocent life is lost, however, this action must be swift and dramatic. Tell the Attorney General Eric Holder and Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez that the nation is watching. Call on them to take immediate action in a city that has already seen the government turn its back once before. Ask them to do for New Orleans now what the federal government did for the City of Los Angeles in 2000. Tell them intervention is needed and needed now by signing the petition below.

New Orleans Police Department Corruption

Greetings,

The nation has been watching New Orleans since the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. In the months and years following the storm another storm has been sweeping the forgotten city. This storm is one of police abuse and corruption. Civil rights violations including those in the Danziger Bridge case are making headlines on a consistent basis and bringing to light a department that has the roots of corruption embedded deeply within its ranks. The people of New Orleans deserve a police force that will serve and protect, not one that instills fear.

Under U.S. Code 14141 the Attorney General can take civil action against an agent of the government when officers acting on behalf of that agency engage in a pattern that deprives citizens of their Constitutional rights. With 8 open civil rights investigations that we the public know of, it is my belief that a pattern has developed. Please consider filing a 14141 action on behalf of the people of New Orleans. Real, tangible change must take place in this city as empty promises of reform have lost their effectiveness, falling on ears that have heard it all before.

Your current investigations into the occurrences within New Orleans are evidence that you are aware of the problem. Media coverage has indicated that the New Orleans Police Department is under more federal scrutiny than any other law enforcement agency in the country. Scrutiny, however, is nothing without subsequent action.

I am writing this letter urging you to take immediate action in a city that so badly needs its confidence restored. While there are good officers within the department, their good intentions are masked by a blue wall that seems to be miles thick. Show the city of New Orleans that the federal government sees what is happening and take swift action. Don't let another innocent life be lost at the hands of this broken department.
