Supermarket chains in the U.K. have been accused of letting their factory farmed salmon suppliers shoot local seals for getting too close to the salmon on their fish farms.

This isn't humane, environmentally-friendly, or "sustainable," as they like to label this fish.  Many of these seals are pregnant with seal pups and do not have adequate marine protection.  We have dolphin-friendly tuna - we need seal-friendly salmon!

Please take action and let these supermarket chains know that shooting seals is too high of a cost for eating salmon, and that using deterrent nets instead would be a more humane option that you would be willing to pay for.

Please Protect Seals Around Your Suppliers' Salmon Farms

Dear Sir / Madam,

It has come to my attention that many unprotected seals suffer for the production of factory farmed salmon.

As a retailer that sells factory farmed salmon and sources this through various salmon farm suppliers, I am writing to ask that you cease to source from farms that regularly shoot the local seals that encroach on these farmed fish. I urge you to firmly tell your suppliers that this practise will not be tolerated.

Shooting already depleting numbers of seals for the sake of cheap farmed salmon is neither humane, environmentally-friendly, nor sustainable. There are many other ways of deterring seals such as nets, that might cost more for the farms, but public opinion shows that your customers (such as myself) are willing to pay that extra cost. Shooting seals is too high a cost for me to currently buy farmed salmon.

We've come a long way with "dolphin-friendly tuna;" this would be the start of "seal-friendly salmon." Please make it a company policy to stop supporting salmon farms that shoot seals.
