In Somalia, Al Shabaab -- a group of Islamic militants working to overthrow the country's transitional government -- has been condemned by a United Nations human rights expert following the stoning to death of a woman for adultery. Al Shabaab makes use "cruel, inhuman and degrading" punishments, including amputations, stonings, and torture, handed down for crimes as minor as petty theft.

Last year, Amnesty International called attention to Al Shabaab's human rights violations, especially against women and girls, after the fatal stoning of a 13-year-old on charges of adultery -- after the girl reported being raped by three men. However, in large part, the rest of the world has ignored the abuses occurring in Somalia.

Earlier this month, a man was stoned to death for adultery. His pregnant girlfriend is currently due to suffer the same fate after giving birth to their child. Bashir Goth, a Somalia analyst, argues, "There should have been an outcry but there is silence from the international community."

Tell the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy and Global Women's Issues that this is not something to be silent on. Send the later below to Barbara Boxer (Chair) and Roger Wicker (Ranking Member) asking them to look into the Al Shabaab human rights violations in Somalia and immediately issue a statement of condemnation to join the UN and AI.

Speak Out Against Human Rights Violations in Somalia

Dear Senator,

As a leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy and Global Women's Issues, I ask you to speak out and take steps against the Al Shabaab movement's egregious human rights violations in Somalia.

A United Nations human rights expert condemned the a group of Islamic militants for utilizing "cruel, inhuman and degrading" punishments after the stoning to death of a woman for adultery. Sentences such as amputations, stonings, and torture are handed down by the Al Shabaab for crimes as minor as petty theft.

Last year, Amnesty International called attention to Al Shabaab's human rights violations, especially against women and girls, following after the fatal stoning of a 13-year-old who had reported being raped by three men. Amnesty International has also issued a condemnation against Al Shabaab's practices.

However, in large part, the rest of the world has ignored the abuses occurring in Somalia. The United States should not be one of those silent voices.

Earlier this month, a man was stoned to death for adultery. His pregnant girlfriend is currently due to suffer the same fate after giving birth to their child. The human rights violations must stop before more people are killed or maimed. Please look into the Al Shabaab abuses, issue a statement of condemnation to join the United Nations' and Amnesty International's, and take steps to address the violence against Somalis.
