Stop Canada's Cruel Seal Hunt

Stop Canada's Cruel Seal Hunt
The Issue
Use your buying power to tell the Canadian government to end the seal hunt.
The 2007 Canadian seal hunt left at least 215,000 seals dead-almost all of them babies, some as young as 12 days old.
One of our most effective weapons against the hunt is the Canadian seafood boycott. Seal hunting is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's East Coast. They earn only a small fraction of their annual incomes from killing seals-the remainder from fisheries such as shrimp, lobster, and snow crabs. In 2007, the landed value of the commercial seal hunt was roughly $12 million (Canadian), a figure that is dwarfed by the billions of dollars' worth of seafood that Canada exports globally. If forced to choose between the seal hunt and income from seafood exports, Canada's fishing industry will use its power to end the hunt. The connection between Canada's commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt gives consumers all over the world the power to end the hunt.
The boycott is working: Since it went into effect, the global value of Canadian snow crab exports has fallen by over $570 million. That's a 29% drop compared to pre-boycott levels.
We're getting close to ending this hunt, but we are not there yet. Help us keep the pressure on Canada's fishing industry by teaming up with the more than 545,000 people around the world who have joined the boycott. We'll deliver your pledge to Canada's government, so the politicians will know you've joined our international ProtectSeals team to end this shameful hunt.
Sign the petition to ban seal product trade in the European Union.
