We are extremely concerned for the safety and well-being of over 5,000 Hmong in Northern Vietnam’s Dien Bien province, over 100 Hmong reported to be ‘detained,’ and over 600 reported to remain in hiding. Over the past few weeks, international news media outlets such as MSN, the Washington Post, Bloomberg, and BBC have confirmed that over 5,000 Hmong-Vietnamese gathered to protest land rights violations, ethnic discrimination and religious persecution. Recently news outlets confirmed that Vietnamese officials have ‘detained’ Hmong protestors. It is unclear what this detainment process entails or if the detainees are safe.

We are concerned about these detainees, as well as what will happen to the Hmong-Vietnamese community (which numbers over 700,000 across Vietnam) after media attention dies down. Human Rights Watch is now calling for a full investigation, transparency in the situation, and media access to the Dien Bien province. We fully support and echo these requests.

We urge our elected officials to look into this matter and to encourage the State Department to press the Vietnamese Embassy for credible information and reports regarding the safety and well-being of the Hmong in Vietnam in a timely manner.

Sign on to this petition and we will send the attached letter to your U.S. Senators, Congressmen, the State Department, and the Ambassador of Vietnam, urging them to investigate the current situation and stand up for the human rights of the Hmong in Vietnam!

Investigate the human rights of Hmong in Vietnam

Greetings,

It is with great urgency and concern that I write you this letter regarding the mass protests of Hmong in Vietnam that were reported recently by MSN, the Washington Post, Bloomberg, BBC and several other major media outlets. It is confirmed that over 5,000 Hmong-Vietnamese gathered in protest of land rights violations, ethnic discrimination and religious persecution, with over 100 'detained' and over 600 in hiding. I am concerned for their safety and fear some may have experienced violence and persecution

I am writing to ask that you investigate the current situation and provide us with credible information and reports regarding the safety and well-being of the Hmong in Vietnam in a timely manner. As you know, though this is happening overseas, the transnational connectedness of the Hmong diaspora means that what happens overseas also impacts our communities here in the United States. We need reliable updates regarding the safety of our Hmong brothers and sisters beyond what the media is reporting.

Several mainstream news outlets confirm that Hmong protestors have been ‘detained’ by Vietnamese officials. It is unclear what this detainment process entails or how many have been detained. We are extremely concerned for their safety and well-being in addition to the repercussions the Hmong-Vietnamese community (which numbers over 700,000 across Vietnam) will face after media attention dies down. Human Rights Watch is now calling for a full investigation, transparency in the situation, and media access to the Dien Bien province (which has been denied and continues to be denied currently).

We support the requests that Human Rights Watch is advocating for and seek timely recourse to these disturbing issues. I strongly encourage you to investigate this matter and provide us with credible information and reports regarding the safety and well-being of the Hmong in Vietnam in a timely manner.
