Why This Is Important

As New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg says, "The ability to practice your religion was one of the real reasons America was founded.”

However, the planned construction of an Islamic community center near the site of the Twin Towers has sparked heated controversy and calls to ban its construction, which would be a clear violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Mayor Bloomberg, who grew up surrounded by anti-Semitism and thus knows what it feels like to be a target of religious discrimination, has been a staunch supporter of the right of the Cordoba House to be built in downtown Manhattan. He reports being told by the families of victims of 9/11, “Our relatives would have wanted this country and this city to follow and actually practice what we preach and what we believe in.”

I Stand in Support of Religious Tolerance Near Ground Zero

Greetings,

As New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg says, "The ability to practice your religion was one of the real reasons America was founded.”

The planned construction of an Islamic community center near the site of the Twin Towers has sparked heated controversy and calls to ban its construction, which would be a clear violation of the First Amendment of the U.S.

I stand with Mayor Mike Bloomberg in support of religious tolerance in New York.
