Slavic National Holiday in the USA Request

Greetings,

Whereas, there are many federal, religious, traditional, and national observance holidays throughout the year, celebrated in the United States, that recognize certain cultures and nationalities of the people of the great land of America.

Whereas, various ethnic and religious groups in America celebrate days with special meaning to them, even though these are not national holidays. Jews, for example, observe their high holy days in September. Muslims celebrate Ramadan. African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa. Irish Americans celebrate the old country's patron saint, St. Patrick. Also, in public schools we have Black history month. Hindu celebrate Diwali. Many recognize the Chinese New Year. There are many other such religious and ethnic celebrations in the United States. Many of us respect and admire these American holidays and traditions.

Whereas, there is an estimated 3 million people of Slavic descent in the USA. They are people from the countries of the former Soviet Union (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and others) and from surrounding Slavic lands - Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, etc. They share the same culture, and traditions, and most of them speak Russian.

Whereas, the Slavic National Holiday in the USA Center, Inc., with the support Slavic population of the Untied States of America, proposes to start a Holiday which will recognize Slavic culture and history in the USA.

Whereas, if such national holiday is established and publicized, it will help local Slavic communities and churches around the country to unite and to organize cultural events that will introduce Russian culture, art, traditions, food to neighborhoods.

Whereas, the proposed date for the Holiday is the 24 of May. It is recognized by Slavic people as the birthday of their language, when in Bulgaria of IX century Slavic script was creates by Greek missionaries to Slavic land, Saints Cyril and Methodius.

We, the undersigned, support the request of Serge Taran, Founder of Slavic National Holiday in the USA Center, Inc. for you to issue a Presidential Proclamation establishing the "24th of May" as Slavic National Holiday in the USA.
