Voices Communique: An Essay from Ed Tick   :)

Many members of Voices are educators. As the 2009-2010 school year is just a month away we thought we would ask all of our subscribers to recommend books, films and other resources that teachers should consider to share in their classes or suggest to their students as supplemental materials for their projects.

Two of our members, one a MyVoice member, Lyn Miller-Lachman, and a frequent contributor to our blog, Joe Bruchac, have written and produced such works.

Check out a review of Lynn’s Gringolandia on MyVoice’s Book Enthusiast Group. Joe Bruchac, one of our country’s greatest Native American storytellers has produced Honor Songs, a collection of Northeastern Native music mixed with Abenaki storytelling.

Ed Tick's "The Boundaries of Destruction"

Ed Tick, author of War and the Soul, has written an essay called "The Boundaries of Destruction" that we've posted on our blog.

Here's an excerpt:

"Contemplating [Robert] McNamara, Einstein, and the worldwide devastation of innocent people, the infrastructure and the environment, we must ask: How, when, why did unbounded destruction become valid war-making policy? How can it be that we sanction the massive killings of innocent human beings and harm to the planet as acceptable strategy? What must our stand be in relation to these acts done in our name? During our trips to Viet Nam, when we ask Viet Cong vets how they could torture or make booby traps, they answer, 'It was our only psychological weapon against your horrible mass bombings of our people and land.' "
