The New York State Senate is considering a historic civil-rights bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state, but some legislators are determined to avoid a vote on the issue. The Assembly has already passed the bill, and Gov. Patterson says he will sign it into law--now we're only waiting on the Senate. This petition, to be sent to the Senate leaders and individual members, calls for the legislature to conduct a vote this when they re-convene this Tuesday for a special session, and to vote YES to legalize same-sex marriage.
New York has always led the nation in progress, and now it's our turn to lead New York. Let's show our lawmakers that we, gay or straight, all stand in solidarity, and that we support the freedom to marry. This petition is intended to give a last minute show of support for the cause.

This week, the Senate has an awesome opportunity to grant an important right to millions of New Yorkers. In Tuesday's extraordinary session, it is imperative that the Senate take-up and pass the bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
Same-sex marriage is a civil right, and now is our chance, as a state, to lead the nation in the struggle for equality. The Assembly and Governor Patterson have shown their support for the measure, and it is time for the Senate to join them in making history.
Please, I'm asking you to commit your support for equal rights for all New Yorkers by pledging to vote YES for same-sex marriage in this Tuesday's extraordinary session.
