The dedicated volunteers of O'Argoes Animal Welfare Society (Trikala Shelter Dogs) care for 200 dogs at the shelter and numerous strays on the street. In Greece, dogs are viewed as "pests" and often the victims of public hangings, fed glass, poisoned, doused with acid, beaten, and starved. The average life span for a dog in Greece is only two years.

As dire as the situation is, there is a small glimmer of hope that lies with the women of the Trikala Animal Shelter. These women have given everything they have to helping the dogs and cats in rural Trikala, Greece. They currently have over 200 cats and dogs in their care and they receive no funding from the government. Instead, they rely on volunteers and handouts of any kind. When their money runs out, so does the hope of all the animals in their care.

Please join us in telling Mayor Lappas that this is NOT acceptable by any standards.

Recognize and Fund O'Argos Animal Welfare Society of Trikala

Dear Mayor Lappas,

It is has recently come to my attention that two years ago, all funds and support from the O'Argos Animal Welfare Society of Trikala and transported the shelter dogs to a “dump” to fend for themselves. This is disturbing, since Trikala has a substantial problem with strays and you have taken away the primary means of caring for them.

There is no justification for this kind of action. While the world is aware of the financial problems facing Greece, your Municipality did not have to derecognize the shelter. A policy of caring for strays rather than disposing of them would boost the global reputation of your Municipality and even boost tourism to your historic sites.

I urge you to reinstate O’Argos Animal Welfare Society of Trikala as a recognized shelter, restore at least partial funds for emergency veterinary care and food, as well as allow the shelter to remain in its’ current location. Please set an example and show that these standards are NOT acceptable.
